Is There Any Pain Involved In
The Procedure?

Most CT exams are painless, fast and easy, including CT angiogram. There are many people out there that take into consideration the aspect of how painful the procedure will be before they decide if they will proceed with it. So how painful is this procedure?

  • The scanning itself is not painful but there might be some discomfort from having to remain still for several minutes. If you have a hard time remaining still, are claustrophobic, have chronic pain, this procedure might be stressful. You can ask the medical personnel in charge to give you a medication to help you tolerate the scanning procedure.
  • During the introduction of the contrast material, you will feel a pin prick when the needle is inserted into the vein. You may experience a warm, flushed sensation when the contrast material is injected. Also, there might also be a metallic taste in your mouth that can last for a few minutes.
  • When you enter a modern CT scanner, you will hear a slight buzzing, clicking and whirring sounds as it revolves around you during the imaging process.
  • You will be alone in the exam room during the CT scan, unless there are special circumstances. However, you will be able to see, hear and speak with him during the entire time.
